

Republic of El Salvador is located in the southeast of the North American continent, with a population of 6,090,646, making
it the 106th largest national population. Its capital and largest city is San Salvador with a total population of 2,442,017. The
country encompasses 21,040 square kilometers making it the 152nd largest country in total area. It shares boundaries with
Honduras, Pacific Ocean and Guatemala.
President Mauricio Funes Cartagena is recognized as the Chief of State and Head of Government and, along with Vice
President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, achieves that status through popular vote and holds that position for a single five year
term. Its form of government is a republic and they celebrate the creation of their constitution on 23rd of December 1983.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are Spanish and Nahua. It counts among its major religions Roman Catholic
and other faiths. As sources of mass communication it has 61 AM, 30 FM and 5 Television stations.
Major geographical features are Cerro El Pital, its highest point at 2,730 meters and Pacific Ocean, its lowest point at 0
meters. Its principal waterway is parts of the Rio Lempa, which measures about 200 kilometers.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are food processing, beverages, petroleum,
chemicals, fertilizer, textiles, furniture and light metals. Its official currency is the United States Dollar.
Here’s something you may not know about El Salvador. There are more then 25 volcanoes in El Salvador, only three of
which (The Izulco, San Miguel and Santa Ana, which is the largest) are still known to be active.
