Department of Reunion is located in the Indian Ocean of the African Continent, with a population of 839,500,
making it the 101st largest national population. Its capital largest city is Saint-Denis with a total population of
158,139. The country encompasses 2,510 square kilometers making it the 176th largest country in total area. It
shares boundaries with Indian Ocean.
President Francois Hollande of France is recognized as the chief of state and achieves that status through popular
vote and holds that position for five years. He is represented by Prefect Jean-Luc Marx who is appointed by the
President of France on the advice of the French Minister of the Interior. President of the General Council Nassimah
Dindar and President of the Regional Council Didier Robert are recognized as the Heads of Government and achieve
that status through election of their respective councils and hold those position for six years. Its form of
government is a French overseas department and they celebrate the creation of their constitution on 4th of October
1958 (French Constitution).
The languages commonly or officially spoken are French and Creole. It counts among its major religions Roman
Catholic, Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist. As sources of mass communication it has 2 AM, 55 FM and 35 Television
stations.
Major geographical features are Piton Des Neiges, its highest point at 3,069 meters and Indian Ocean, its lowest
point at 0 meters. Its principal waterway is the Indian Ocean, which provides access to its many ports including is
deep-water harbour at La Port, which measures 207 kilometers along its coastline.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are sugar, rum, cigarettes,
handicrafts and flower oil extraction. Its official currency is Euro.
Here’s something you may not know about Reunion. Before the Portuguese discovered Reunion Island, there were
no people on the island. Everyone who now lives on Reunion was imported from somewhere else including Africa,
China and Europe.
