
Saint Helena is a collection of islands (Ascension, Saint Helena, Tristan de Cunha, Inaccessible, the Nightingale Islands and
Gough) located in the South Atlantic Ocean about midway between the South American and African Continents, with a
population of 7,728, making it the 227th largest national population. Its capital is Jamestown and its largest city is Half Tree
Hollow with a total population of 901. The country encompasses 308 square kilometers making it the 209th largest country
in total area. It shares boundaries with South Atlantic Ocean.
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is recognized as the Chief of State and achieves that status through heredity and
holds that position for life or abdication. Governor Mark Capes is recognized as the Head of Government and along with
Administrator of Ascension Island Colin Wells and Administrator of Tristan da Cunha Sean Burns (whom are appointed by
the Governor) achieves that status through appointment by the Queen and holds that position at her pleasure. Its form of
government is am overseas territory of the United Kingdom and they celebrate the creation of the Saint Helena, Ascension
and Tristan da Cunha Constitution Order 2009 on 1 September 2009
The languages commonly or officially spoken are English. It counts among its major religions Anglican, Baptist, Seventh-
Day Adventist and Roman Catholic. As sources of mass communication it has 1 AM, 1 FM.
Major geographical features are Queen Mary’s Peak (Tristan de Cunha), Green Mountain (Ascension), and Mount Actaeon
(St. Helena) its highest points at 2,062 meters, 859 meters and 818 meters (respectively) and the Atlantic Ocean, its lowest
point at 0 meters. Its principal waterway is the Atlantic Ocean, which measures 100 kilometers of coastline.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are construction, crafts, fishing and
philatelic sales. Its official currency is the Saint Helena Pound.
