Republic of India is located in the south of the Asian Continent, with a population of 1,173,108,018, making it the 2nd largest
national population. Its capital is New Delhi and its largest city is Mumbai, also known as Bombay, with a total population of
13,922,125. The country encompasses 3,287,540 square kilometers making it the 7th largest country in total area. It shares
boundaries with Pakistan, China, Burma, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.
President Pratibha Patil is recognized as the Chief of State and, long with Vice President Hamid Ansari, achieves that status
through majority of the electoral college consisting of elected members of both houses of Parliament and the legislatures and
holds that position for five-year term and is eligible for a second term. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is recognized as the
Head of Government and achieves that status through parliamentary members of the majority party following legislative elections
and holds that position five years. Its form of government is a federal republic and they celebrate the creation of their
constitution on 26th of January 1950.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Malayalam,
Kannada, Oriya, Punjabi, Assamese, Kashmiri, Sindhi and Sanskrit. It counts among its major religions Hindu, Muslim, Christian,
Sikh and other and unspecified faiths. As sources of mass communication it has 153 ,AM, 91 FM, 68 Short Wave and 565
Television stations.
Major geographical features are Kanchenjunga, its highest point at 8,598 meters and Indian Ocean, its lowest point at 0 meters.
Its principal waterway is Ganges River, which measures about 14,100 kilometers.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are textiles, chemicals, food processing, steel,
transportation equipment, cement, mining, petroleum, machinery and software. Its official currency is the Indian Rupee.
Here’s something you may not know about India. The McDonalds in India don’t serve beef on their patties. They serve only
chicken, mutton and fish.
