
Kingdom of the Netherlands (commonly known as Holland) is located in the west of the European Continent, with a
population of 16,730,632, making it the 63rd largest national population. Its capital and largest city is Amsterdam with a
total population of 1,209,419 however its seat of government is The Hague. The country encompasses 41,543 square
kilometers making it the 135th largest country in total area. It shares boundaries with Germany, Belgium and the North Sea.
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is recognized as the Chief of State and, along with Heir Apparent Prince Willem-
Alexander, achieves that status through heredity and holds that position for life or abdication. Prime Minister Mark Rutte is
recognized as the Head of Government and, along with Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher, achieves that status
when, following Second Chamber elections, the leader of the majority party or leader of a majority coalition is usually
appointed Prime Minister by the Monarch and holds that position four years.. Its form of government is a Constitutional
Monarchy and they celebrate the creation of their constitution in 1815.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are Dutch and Frisian. It counts among its major religions Roman Catholic,
Dutch Reformed, Calvinist, Muslim and other and no faiths. As sources of mass communication it has 4 AM, 246 FM, 3
Short Wave and 21 Television stations.
Major geographical features are Vaalserberg, its highest point at 322 meters and Zuidplaspolder, its lowest point at -7
meters. Its principal waterway is the North Sea, which measures 451 kilometers of coastline.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are agroindustries, metal and engineering
products, electrical machinery and equipment, chemicals, petroleum, construction, microelectronics and fishing. Its official
currency is the Euro.
Here’s something you may not know about The Netherlands. Although the Netherlands is the country's official name some
people call it Holland.
