Republic of Singapore is a city-state located in the southeast islands of the Asian Continent, with a population of
4,657,542, making it the 117th largest national population. Its capital and largest city is
Singapore with a total
population of 4,657,542. The country encompasses 683 square kilometers making it the 189th largest country in
total area. It shares boundaries with Johore Strait (which separates it from Malaysia), Singapore Strait and the Main
Strait.

President Sellapan Ramanathan is recognized as the Chief of State and achieves that status through popular vote and
holds that position for a six year term, though Sellapan Ramanathan was appointed president in August 2005 after
Presidential Elections Committee disqualified three other would-be candidates .No presidential election was
scheduled. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is recognized as the Head of Government and, along with Senior
Ministers Goh Chok Tong and Shunmugam Jayakumar, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Deputy Prime
Ministers Wong Kan Seng and Teo Chee Hean, achieves that status following legislative elections, where the leader
of majority party or leader of majority coalition is usually appointed prime minister by the president.  Its form of
government is a parliamentary republic and they celebrate the creation of their constitution on 3rd of June 1959.

The languages commonly or officially spoken are Mandarin, English, Malay, Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Tamil,
other Chinese dialects and other languages. It counts among its major religions Buddhist, Muslim, Taoist, Hindu,
Catholic, other Christian, other religions and none. As sources of mass communication it has 17 FM, 2 Short Wave
and 1 Television station.

Major geographical features are Bakit Timah, its highest point at 100 meters and Singapore Strait, its lowest point at
0 meters. Its principal waterway is Singapore Strait, which measures 10 square kilometers.

Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are electronics, chemicals, financial
services, oil drilling equipment, petroleum refining, rubber processing and products, processed food and beverages,
ship repair, offshore platform construction, life sciences and entrepot trade. Its official currency is Singaporian
Dollar.

Here’s something you may not know about Singapore. The flying fox, the world’s largest bats, with a wingspan of
up to 1.5 meters, can be found on Poulu Abin, one of the islands off mainland Singapore.

This Island is unique because it is one of the only city-states in the world. At a hotel
you can board cable cars to the highest point in Singapore and see the entire
country from there. As you can see in the photos, it's obviously very beautiful and,
from what I hear, the cleanest city in the world. Singapore is very special to me as my
mother's father, Granddad Allen, helped construct the subway system. So one day I
hope to go there, ride the subway, and think of my Granddad, who died last year.
