United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is located in the west of the European Continent, with a
population of 63,047,162, making it the 22nd largest national population. Its capital and largest city is London with a
total population of 8,174,100. The country encompasses 243,610 square kilometers making it the 80th largest country
in total area. It shares boundaries with North Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, English Channel, Celtic Sea and Irish Sea.
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is recognized as the Chief of State and achieves that status through heredity
and holds that position for life or abdication. Her Heir Apparent is Prince Charles. Prime Minister David William
Donald Cameron is recognized as the Head of Government and, along with Deputy Prime Minister Nicholas William
Peter "Nick" Clegg, achieves that status following legislative elections, when the leader of the majority party or the
leader of the majority coalition is usually appointed prime minister and holds that position for five years. Because no
clear majority was victorious during the 5 May 2010 parliamentary elections, a coalition government comprised of the
Conservative Party and Liberal Democrat Party was formed with the party leaders assuming the roles of Head of
Government. Its form of government is a constitutional monarchy and they do not celebrate the creation of a unifying
constitution but instead operate under a series of laws and traditions.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are English, Welsh and Scottish. It counts among its major religions
Christian, Muslim, Hindu and other, unspecified and no faiths. As sources of mass communication it has 219 AM, 431
FM, 3 Short Wave and 228 Television stations.
Major geographical features are Ben Nevis, its highest point at 1,343 meters and The Fens, its lowest point at –4
meters. Its principal waterway is the English Channel, which measures 3,200 kilometers.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are machine tools, electric power
equipment, automation equipment, railroad equipment, shipbuilding, aircraft, motor vehicles and parts, electronics and
communication equipment, metals, chemicals, coal and petroleum. Its official currency is British Pound.
Here’s something you may not know about United Kingdom. Oxford is known as the “ City of Dreaming Spires” a
term Coined by Mathew Arnold based on the architecture of the world famous university buildings. Oxford has been
the home of royalty and scholars for over 800 years but did not become an established city until the 9th century.
